La Cliff House (Casa del Barranco) ha estado encaramada desde 1863 en la Punta Lobos del Océano Pacífico, al este de San Francisco, formando parte del parque nacional más grande de los Estados Unidos, el Área Nacional de Recreo del Golden Gate.
Aunque en 1863 se construye el primer edificio, de una planta con terraza alrededor, es en 1894 cuando se construyen los baños cubiertos por una estructura de invernadero. Este año, el restaurante arde y un año después se construye la segunda Cliff House, un palacio victoriano, que abre en 1986.
Este es el edificio espectacular que muestra la foto, de 6 plantas con torre, que se llamó Gingerbread Palace. En 1906 se produce el terremoto de San Francisco, y el edificio sobrevive, pero desgraciadamente, arde un año después.
The Cliff House has perched since 1863 on Point Lobos by the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco west, as a part o the biggest Park in the USA, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA).
In 1863 the first restaurant is built, with one floor and a balcony around. In 1894 beguines the elevation of the famous covered baths with a greenhouse structure. This year, the restaurant burns and a year later, the second Cliff House, a Victorian palace is built, and opens in 1986.
This is the spectacular building that shows the picture, 6 floors with tower, which was called Gingerbread Palace. In 1906 the San Francisco earthquake happens, but the building survives. Unfortunately, it burns a year later.
La actual Clifford House data de 1909, y también tiene su encanto, es un edificio neoclásico de 3 plantas, cubierta plana y sin ornamentos, que se remodeló externamente para adaptarlo al estilo de los 50, los 70 o los 80.
En 2004 se restaura y pinta en blanco, enfatizando su aspecto de arquitectura griega y añadiéndole un ala contemporánea desde la que se aprecian las ruinas de los baños.
The present Clifford House is from 1909, and also has its charm, is a 3 floor neoclassical building, flat covered, with no ornaments, remodelled externally in order to adapt it to 50’s, 70’s and 80 styles .
It’s restored and painted in white in 2004, to emphasize its Greek architecture aspect, adding a contemporary wing from which there are views to bath ruins.

Los baños, construidos por el ingeniero y multimillonario Adolph Sutro contenían piscinas de agua dulce y salada, a diferentes temperaturas, rodeadas por un salón de baile y un museo con tesoros que Sutro había recopilado en sus viajes. Fueron muy populares por su bajo precio y la excursión que suponía coger el trenecito que llegaba hasta ellos.
Hoy en día, en el restaurante se puede ver la puesta de sol junto al fuego, o escuchar Jazz en el Balcony Lounge todos los viernes noche y, por 45$, tomar el tradicional sanfranciscano brunch buffet con champán de los domingos.
The baths, built by engineer and multimillionaire Adolph Sutro, conteined saltwater and springwater pools, heated to varying degrees, and surrounded by a concert hall and museums stocked with treasures that Sutro had collected in his travels. They were very popular because of the low entry fee and the excursion railroad to reach them.
Nowadays, one can watch the sunset from the restaurant, next to the fire, or to Jazz in the Balcony Lounge all Friday night and, for 45$, have the traditional sanfranciscan Sunday brunch buffet with champagne.
